Geology teacher training courses for 2019

Together with Nord University, the Nordic European Space Education Resource Office have set up two teacher training courses for 2019: «Climate research in the polar landscape» and «Geology at school».

  • Geologi i skolen 2017
  • Field trip at Svalbard
  • Geologi i skolen 2017
  • Geologi i skolen 2017
  • Geologi i skolen 2017

The following two teacher training courses have been set up for 2019. Applications will be open for teachers from nordic countries. For both courses, different software will be used in the course, and course participants must therefore have their own PC with Windows, and be able to install software before, during and after the field trip.

Course: Climate research in the polar landscape – NA129L

Climate change can lead to changes in sea ice, glacier size, permafrost, ocean currents and temperature distribution.

Actual indications of climate change can be monitored using satellites. Knowledge of geological structures provides indications of the history of climate change through millions of years in the polar regions.

Themes for the course are: changes in arctic weather and climate, permafrost, ocean currents and sea ice, glaciers, landscape landforms and landscapes.

  • Application deadline: 15th November 2018
  • Startup course: Tuesday 1st February 2019
  • Teaching language: English

Course: Geology at school – NA138L

Geology is the key to understand the landscape and to explore the climate history.

This course focus in subjects like the landscape formation around us, the search for evidences about sea level changes and ice ages, interpretation of land forms and soils, classification of rocks.

Satellite observations are also presented since they are a great tool for providing geological information and complementing field work.

The field collection emphasizes in practical activities, and in how to combine satellite images with on-site work.

  • Application deadline: 15th November 2018
  • Startup course: Tuesday 8th February 2019
